Butch Blog: New Course and a Phil Mickelson Victory Are Highlights for Pebble Beach

February 9, 2010--Congratulations to Steve Stricker for winning the Northern Trust Open last week. Steve is a great guy and very deserving champion. It is nice to see him back in the winner's circle. The players head north this week for the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, in Pebble Beach, California. This tournament always seems to battle the poor weather conditions; hopefully, this year will be different. According to weather.com, Friday is the only day with a chance of rain.

If the weather holds out we can expect very low scores. When the weather is clear there is no place more beautiful to play golf on the planet than Pebble Beach. The tournament is played on three different golf courses; Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and a new, old course added to the rotation this year: the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club (last used in the rotation in 1977). This is a much welcomed addition as Poppy Hills Golf Course was not a favorite amongst many of the players. The format for the tournament is also a fan favorite with a tour player paired with an amateur (ie. celebrity), which is always very entertaining.

I look for both Phil (Mickelson) and Nick (Watney) to turn it around this week, as they have much higher expectations of their games. This would be a good week to see them both get it going. Good luck to both of them. In saying that, my pick of the week is going to be Phil. I know how much he enjoys this event and there would be nothing nicer than watching him hoist the trophy come Sunday afternoon.--Butch
