Butch Blog: Watney Won in San Diego Last Year But Looks Like Mickelson This Year

January 28, 2010--I would like to start this off by congratulating Bill Haas on winning the Bob Hope Classic. I couldn't be happier for him and the Haas family. Bill started his year off missing the cut at the Sony Open. Instead of staying in Hawaii, he flew to Palm Desert and spent time with my brother, Bill, at Toscana Golf Club. All it took was one little tip to get him back on track; "turn your right foot out to help increase your shoulder turn". The rest is history as Bill went on to win, shooting 30-under par to claim his first PGA Tour victory of his career.

This week's tournament: The Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California, should be exciting with Nick Watney defending his title and Phil Mickelson making his 2010 debut. Phil is very excited to get the year started because of the way he ended 2009 (winning the Tour Championship and the HSBC World Golf Championship in China). Phil has put in a lot of work on all aspects of his game as well as his physical fitness this past off season. He is ready to go. Nick has spent the past two weeks working with me at my school in Las Vegas. He has put in countless hours working on his putting as well as fine tuning his wedge game and the full swing. Nick is very optimistic about defending his title; it will be fun to see how he handles it all.

The tournament will be played on two courses at Torrey Pines, the North and the South (U.S. Open course). The scores should be lower on the North course because it is the easier of the two. This should be a great event because it is the strongest field of 2010 thus far. Good luck to both Phil and Nick.

My dark horse pick last week (Matt Kuchar) almost came through, finishing one shot back in a tie for second. This week's pick is not a dark horse at all; it was actually pretty easy and my pick of the week is none other than Phil Mickleson.--Butch.
